Yoga Nidra translates to yoga sleep. Some of the benefits include relieving muscular, emotional, and mental tension. It can help to treat insomnia and enhance your memory while increasing learning capacity. Yoga Nidra relaxes the mind as well as helping to relieve stress and anxiety. I know what you are thinking “I have no stress or anxiety in my life.” Said no one ever!
The class is non heated and about 45 minutes long. It is written that 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to 4 hours of sleep (according to www.bigshakti.com). Yoga Nidra is “a waking state of sleep”. The body is perfectly still in whatever position is most comfortable to you. The teacher then guides you thru an exercise of relaxation for your entire body, and then into a dream like state of guided meditation. So, truthfully, all you have to do is show up, get comfy, and listen to the voice guiding you. You really don’t have to move at all. It’s actually better if you don’t move! You won’t even sweat. It is ok to fall asleep. Seriously, who knew there were so many benefits to stillness and breath!?!? Oh yeah, YOU DID because you do yoga! I’ts a great way to unwind and get revitalized for the month ahead. And Yoga Nidra is also a great experience to share with friends. Give it a shot. You will love it. We only ask that you please stay awake for the drive home. See you on your mats! Namaste.
